Amity University Uttar Pradesh (AUUP) has announced the launch of the Amity Quantum Mission, a strategic initiative to develop new products in quantum computing for space applications. The announcement came during a two-day workshop on “Quantum Computing for Space Applications” organised by the Amity Institute of Space Science and Technology (AISST) from 9–10 September.

The workshop underscored India’s growing focus on quantum technologies under the National Quantum Mission (2023), bringing together leading scientists, defence experts, industry representatives and international researchers.

Dr Ajai Chowdhry, chairman of the Mission Governing Board of the National Quantum Mission, urged students to lead India’s transition from a service-driven to a product-oriented economy. He noted government support for indigenous manufacturing, including semiconductor production and startup funding of up to ₹50 crore, as key opportunities for young innovators.

Highlighting the importance of quantum technologies in satellite communication, navigation and space debris tracking, Dr L. C. Mangal, Director General (Technology Management), DRDO, called on future entrepreneurs to launch startups that contribute to the mission’s goals.

Chancellor of Amity University, Dr Atul Chauhan, said the university is committed to becoming a hub of quantum space research aligned with ISRO’s vision of satellite-based quantum communication and national security priorities. “Through the Amity Quantum Mission, our scientists and students will design products that advance India’s capabilities in quantum-enabled space technologies,” he affirmed.

Other speakers included Mr Anil Prakash, Director General of the SatCom Industry Association; Gp. Capt. T. H. Anand Rao (Retd), director at the Indian Space Association (ISpA); and Amity vice-chancellor Prof. (Dr) Balvinder Shukla, all of whom emphasised the transformative potential of quantum computing for space exploration and communications.

The event featured technical sessions on topics such as quantum annealers for space problems, securing cryptography in the quantum era, and quantum information theory. Distinguished international academics, including Dr Pietro Torta (University of Milano), Dr D. Bhattacharya (University of Ostrava, Czech Republic), Dr Swaraj Shekhar Nande (TU Dresden, Germany), and Dr Indranil Chakraborty (IIT Hyderabad), contributed to the discussions.
