Karnataka’s school education minister Madhu Bangarappa on Friday said that he would request chief minister Siddaramaiah to consider extension of midday meals to pre university students as well. At the Mega Parents-Teachers Meet held at Vidhana Soudha on the occasion of Children’s Day, Bangarappa interacted with government school and PU students from across the state, both online and in person.

During the session, the minister responded to students’ questions on key issues, including the need for more focus on extracurricular activities, extending the midday meal scheme to PU students, and concerns regarding future employment opportunities.

A government school student, Eeranna, urged the minister to enhance the focus on extracurricular activities. In response, the minister reiterated the government’s commitment to quality education and holistic development. He noted that around 13,000 teachers have already been appointed, with an additional 12,000 teachers and over 6,000 teachers for aided institutions to be recruited soon. He promised greater encouragement for extracurricular programmes based on student needs.

Rakesh, a PU student from Bailhongal, highlighted the long school timings that force many students to leave home very early, and appealed for the midday meal scheme to be extended to PU students. Responding to this, the minister explained that the scheme, earlier available only up to Grade 8, has now been extended to Grade 10, with students receiving eggs or bananas six days a week and Sai Sure nutritional mix five days a week.

The minister also addressed questions regarding free hostel facilities and free transportation for boys, assuring continued support. He announced that from the next academic year, students from Arts and Commerce streams—including those pursuing Law and CA—will receive free coaching for competitive examinations. He further appealed to alumni of government institutions to contribute to the development of their schools and colleges, strengthening public education in the state.
