Students at the Sanjay Gandhi Nursing College protested against the alleged corruption and mental harassment faced by students.
The unresolved issues sparked anger with student representatives protesting that their repeated pleas to college management fell on deaf ears.
They alleged widespread corruption and continuous mental harassment at SGITO College and said that this created an environment of stress that was driving some students into extreme distress and psychological issues.
Students claimed that the college is collecting over 80% more fees than what the university has approved. The college is affiliated with RGUHS. They claimed that even as the annual academic fee fixed by the university is Rs.6,250, the college is charging Rs.11,850. College under various other pretexts, they said the varsity is accepting payments only in cash—raising further suspicion of malpractice.
The university-mandated examination fee is Rs.1,100, but the college is said to be collecting Rs.1,400 from each student, an act students describe as “daylight robbery.”
Collected under heads such as sports fee, library fee, and student welfare fund, students allege that none of these facilities are provided. When students raise questions, instead of addressing the issues, the college allegedly targets them, subjects them to harassment, and demoralises them.
“Student leaders state that institutions meant to build the future of young people have now become centers of corruption, jeopardising students’ careers. The student council has demanded immediate intervention and resolution of these issues. They have warned that if no action is taken within a week, they will launch an intensified protest,” said Dhanush Gowda, ABVP Bengaluru.
